Day 1-3: Palermo - The Heart of Sicily

Stepping off the plane in Palermo, the vibrant capital of Sicily, we were immediately enveloped by the city’s rich history and bustling energy. The aroma of fresh seafood and citrus fruits wafted through the air, inviting us to explore the local markets. We wandered through the historic center, marvelling at the grandeur of the Teatro Massimo and the many different periods of architecture on display. The evenings were spent enjoying traditional Sicilian dinners of grilled swordfish, pizza, doughnuts and tiramisu, as we soaked in the lively atmosphere of this captivating city.

Agrigento

Day 4: Agrigento - Valley of the Temples

A short drive from Palermo brought us to Agrigento, home to the awe-inspiring Valley of the Temples. Walking among the ancient Greek ruins, you feel transported back in time. The Temple of Concordia, with its well-preserved Doric columns, stood majestically against the clear blue sky. As the sun set, the temples were bathed in a golden light, creating a breathtaking scene that was nothing short of magical.

Taormina

Day 5: Taormina - Sicily’s Jewel

Next, we headed to Taormina, a picturesque town perched on a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea. The ancient Greek Theatre, with its panoramic views of Mount Etna and the coastline, was a highlight. Strolling along Corso Umberto, we explored charming boutiques and enjoyed a leisurely gelato. The day ended with a trip to the beach at Giardini Naxos, where we relaxed by the crystal-clear waters and enjoyed the serene beauty of this coastal gem.

Mount Etna

Day 6: Mount Etna - The Mighty Volcano

Leaving Taormina, we set out to explore Mount Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano. The drive up the winding roads offered spectacular views of the Sicilian landscape. Reaching the midway tourist zone, we did a guided tour that took us around the old craters. Walking on the lunar-like terrain, you can’t help but be captivated by the stark beauty and raw power of the volcano. The experience of standing on the edge of a volcanic crater, with smoke rising in the distance and the ground warm underfoot, was exhilarating and unforgettable.

Day 6 Continued: Savoca - A Cinematic Retreat

Our journey continued to Savoca, a small village known for its connection to “The Godfather” film. Walking through the narrow, cobbled streets, we visited Bar Vitelli and the Church of San Nicolò, iconic locations from the movie. The quiet charm of Savoca, with its stunning views of the surrounding countryside, provided a peaceful respite from the bustling cities.

Day 7: Travel and Wineries

Crossing over to the mainland, we visited a local winery in the south Italian countryside for a wine tasting and farm to table dinner. A Devine treat and well worth the drive from Sicily on the way towards Matera.

Matera

Day 8: Matera - City of Stone

Today we visited Matera, famous for its ancient cave dwellings, the Sassi. Exploring the labyrinthine streets, we discovered rock-hewn churches and historic homes carved into the cliffs. The city has become a favored filming location for the movie industry, earning it the nickname “the second Bethlehem.” Its unique scenery has provided the backdrop for numerous films, most notably Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” and the James Bond film “No Time to Die.”

Day 8 Continued: Alberobello Trulli Picturesque

Nestled in the heart of Italy’s Puglia region, Alberobello is a picturesque town renowned for its enchanting trulli; whitewashed stone huts with conical roofs that look straight out of a fairy tale. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, the town’s unique architecture dates back to the 14th century, and its labyrinthine streets offer a delightful journey through history.

Sorrento

Day 9-10: Sorrento - Gateway to the Amalfi Coast

Sorrento welcomed us with its stunning coastal views and vibrant atmosphere. We wandered through the charming streets, lined with lemon trees and artisan shops. The Piazza Tasso buzzed with life, and I savored a delicious meal of gnocchi alla Sorrentina at a local trattoria. In the afternoon, a leisurely boat trip around the Bay of Naples provided breathtaking views of the cliffs and the azure sea.

Day 11: Positano - A Coastal gem

Today saw us take a ferry around to the Amalfi Coast and the coastal town of Positano. This breathtaking seaside village is known for its steep, narrow streets lined with pastel-colored houses, bougainvillea-draped balconies and chic boutiques. Its main beach, Spiaggia Grande, offers stunning views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and is perfect for sunbathing and people-watching. The town’s charming atmosphere is complemented by its delectable restaurants and the historic Church of Santa Maria Assunta, featuring a beautiful majolica-tiled dome. We had a wonderful afternoon exploring the winding pathways and Positano’s enchanting beauty. The vibrant culture makes it a must-visit destination for those seeking an idyllic Italian getaway.

Day 12: Pompeii - Echoes of the Past

The final leg of our journey took us to Pompeii, the ancient city frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Walking through the remarkably preserved ruins, we explored the Forum, the Amphitheatre, and the haunting plaster casts of the victims. The Thermal Spa, with its vivid frescoes, offered a fascinating insight into the life of Pompeii’s ancient inhabitants. It was a poignant and humbling experience, bringing history vividly to life.
